AI is here, how will it effect interior design?

Interior design is an ever-evolving field, with new technologies and materials constantly emerging that enable designers to create spaces that are more functional, sustainable, and beautiful. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in how artificial intelligence (AI) could impact the practice of interior design.

AI has the potential to revolutionize the way designers work by providing them with powerful tools for creating, visualizing, and even automating the design process. From creating custom furniture to predicting which color palettes will be popular, it is already starting to change the way interior design is done. In this blog post, we will explore some of the ways that AI is impacting the field of interior design and the possibilities it holds for the future. Here are some facts you should know, and where we are possibly heading.

The industry is already immersed in AI.  There are already several AI-powered programs available for interior designers to use. Some popular examples include programs that can automatically generate floor plans and 3D renderings, and others that use machine learning algorithms to recommend furniture, colors, and other design elements based on a client's preferences. For example, SketchUp, a 3D modeling program allows users to create and edit 3D models and design spaces with ease. Additionally, RoomSketcher is an online platform that allows users to create floor plans and visualizations and use real-world products to furnish and decorate the spaces.

For now, AI can assist designers, but for how long? In the future, AI could be used to help interior designers work more efficiently, as well as to create new forms of design that would be difficult or impossible for humans to replicate. For example, AI could be used to analyze data about how people interact with spaces and then use that information to make recommendations for how to improve the design. Additionally, AI could be used to optimize energy use in buildings and to help reduce the environmental impact of design. Furthermore, AI can provide powerful tools for creating, visualizing, and even automating the design process, which allows designers to focus on their creativity.

This could lead to a reduction in the number of junior design positions, but it could also lead to an increase in the number of higher-skilled positions that require knowledge of AI and its application.

Creativity is still extremely valuable. It’s important to note that AI is not likely to fully replace interior designers or the field altogether. While AI can assist designers in certain aspects of their work, it is still a tool, and ultimately, it's the designer's job to use it creatively and in a way that elevates the design. Additionally, designers bring other important skills to the table like creativity, critical thinking, and the ability to understand and interpret client needs. The human touch, artistic interpretation, and the ability to adapt to the individuality of each client, cannot be replaced. Furthermore, as the use of AI and automation increases, it could potentially lead to the creation of new roles and opportunities within the field that did not previously exist.

One thing that can’t be denied, AI is here and here to stay. With a growing system, and fast-paced industry, I would advise designers and architects start to think about how they will incorporate AI into their business.
